Snagging Rights, a Moped, and a Full Tummy: EnSoc’s 2026 Snag Eating Comp

Wednesday May 20th was a lovely day with a light breeze, blue skies and a gazebo perfectly lit by the sun. It truly was the most perfect conditions to watch a group of students inhale a free feed.

Out by C Block’s lawn, the event carved into every UC foodie’s calendar took place: the annual EnSoc Snag Eating Competition. Fifteen competitors handpicked by EnSoc’s committee. Ten sausages. Ten pieces of bread. BYO sauce and water.

Event organiser, Lachie, said it was a pleasant surprise there was no blender in sight -- because apparently, “that’s happened before.”

The only other rule: No vommitting allowed. Otherwise? Instant disqualification.

Like many official competitions, the crowd was introduced to the contestants prior to the event starting. Each of the contestants were asked their name and a unique question.

While the boys seemed to give the driest of answers, competitor Mischa made sure her fellow competitors knew she was “the sausage master of [her] flat.”

After 10 minutes of participant introductions, the competition was finally underway.

I had no idea what to expect – but let me tell you, I have never seen a group of people so committed. Each participant really put their heart into it.

And let’s just say if you closed your eyes, it was like listening to Alex Cooper’s Gluck Gluck 9000 podcast all over again (IYKYK) – maybe that’s because I was stood near the “throat goat” himself (sorry King, I didn’t quite catch your name. L).

The tactics during the event were questionable – I thought dunking white bread in tubs of water was certainly one way to make a bad thing worse.

Exec member, Angus, said “everyone signed a waiver.” Which I think translates to ‘legally, EnSoc is in the clear if someone begins to choke.’

At 6 minutes, 37 seconds, the winner was crowned: Megatronics student, Luke Rhoades.

Rhoades appeared humble in his victory, even as the crowd showed massive support for his triumph. When asked about his performance, he said: “yeah, I quite like sausages.”

It was Rhoades’ first eating competition. He said the free lunch was “pretty good” and the moped was an “added bonus.” Cheers EnSoc!

Another contestant, Max, said his passion for food is what encouraged him to sign up.

Max was one of the few who opted for sauce. He said it helped his performance because “you definitely get flavour fatigue, so you can sort of mix and match.”

Who would’ve thought 10 plain pre-cooked sausages and pieces of dry white bread could be so thrilling? This comp really has attracted UC’s brightest.

A phenomenal show put on by EnSoc. And to the contestants: keep practicing and see you next year.

Contestants all lined up, ready and waiting.
