Shock Sites
by Deborah // April 1 2009
This is a Deborah how-to guide. This week’s guide involves sending people to shock sites. I will define a shock site as “A website with the purpose of instantly displaying content you wouldn’t want others thinking you were looking at online and/or to make the viewer feel physically unpleasant. ” So, why would anyone bother sending someone to a shocksite? Either revenge or hilarity. People’s reactions can be priceless. Maybe you just need to brighten up your day by making someone else’s worse. Or perhaps someone fucked you off and you need to pay that bitch back for trying to make moves on your boyfriend at a flatwarming.
The example I will use for this article is meatspin. Meatspin is a shocksite which plays a short movie over and over. The movie is of a rotating penis and there is a counter which records the number of spins. The page loads fast for near-instant viewer embarrassment. Meatspin is a great all-purpose shocksite. There are others, such as 2girls1cup and 1guy1jar that have longer load times and hence require the viewer to want to continue watching them. I will now outline two broad methods for sending people to meatspin.
Method 1: Setting homepage/bookmarks
This requires direct access to the victim’s computer. If the homepage in modified in the browser, the next it is restarted = meatspin. Or change their bookmark location, the bookmark will look the same but when they click it will go to meatspin. This should be done every time you see someone who has left a computer unlocked.
How to change homepage in Firefox: tool>options>main> change the homepage > ok
How to change bookmarks in Firefox: bookmarks>right-click on a bookmark>change location to “www.meatspin.com”>save changes
Best time to strike: When your friend has left their computer unattended and unlocked in the Loft. This way when they return and start up their browser, or try to go to facebook, you got ‘em and there are lots of people round to see it. If you’re feeling mean, change all their bookmarks to meatspin.
Method 2: Sending them to a link
If you don’t have physical access to the victim’s computers, it’s still easy to get them spinning. Links can be sent via email, a message board, a forum post or over chat. If you’re sending a message to the person on bebo or facebook, say you need a fast connection and that it works best in one of the university computer rooms. The site is hosted at www.meatspin.com, but if people have heard of meatspin.com or think it sounds suspicious they’re not going click on your link. So you have to conceal it.
The easiest concealment technique is using a Redirecting URL, for example tinyurl.com. These free services are primarily intended for making a very long or complicated web address smaller and simpler to remember, but can easily be misused to send people to porn. Real example from DC++ chat:
<nihilism> Anyone know how to get windows media player to play avis?
<debz85> I just had that same problem the other day nih, check out the FAQs here: www.tinyurl.co.uk/b5mn
<nihilism> debz you fucking wanker, you knew my supervisor was in the room
If you’re smart, and you have your own website, you can set up .html forwarding. Naturally, someone else has already done this, an example of which is funnymyspacecomment.net. Seems innocent enough, but it redirects straight to meatspin.com. Just come up with a convincing story and they won’t suspect a thing. Why not try it out, if any of your friends don’t read my column they deserve to be sent to a rotating penis.
You won’t get a 100% success rate, so when you do trick someone it’s an awesome drug-free high. Not better than sex, but still good- well, better than sex with a short guy. Probably the worst meatspinning I have done is when I was at an Open Home and saw an unlocked computer and reset the homepage. Just shows you should never leave a computer unlocked.
